Mingoes soccer struggles in season-opening tour

DORAL, FLORIDA - The University of The Bahamas men's soccer team hoped to bounce back from the team's season opening loss to The Millennia Atlantic University Macaws in the second match of the two-game tour.

The Mingoes had many opportunities to score on the Macaws in the blazing Florida sun but just could not find the net in the second game of the series. The Mingoes lost 4-1 in a match full of opportunities at the Doral Meadow Park Friday.

In the first match of the series, The Mingoes lost 5-1.

The Mingoes had a total of 14 shots with seven on target compared to the Macaws which only had eight total shots with six on target.

The Macaws scored in the 7th minute and 26th minute to go up 2-0 very quickly in the very aggressive match. The Mingoes responded on a penalty kick score from Peter Julmis in the 49th minute to put The Mingoes in a position to mount a comeback in the second half of the match.

"As a striker the main thing is that you always want to score," Julmis said. "I wasn't fully pleased with myself with that score because I had a few more chances to score but I didn't unfortunately."

Despite a slew of opportunities to score, The Mingoes still conceded goals in the 74th and 81st minute to make the final score 4-1.

"We were better than in the first game of the series in this game," head coach Alex Thompson said. "We changed our game plan once we realized what we were dealing with in terms of the conditions of the field, the field size and spacing, and the referees."

The temperature at the field topped at 91 degrees Fahrenheit and felt like 101 degrees on Friday.

"We stuck to the game plan we just didn't execute in front of goal and they just had some great goals," Thompson added. "Sometimes there's no answer for quality."

The Mingoes next play Atlantis University October 12, Kendal, Florida.
