Bio
Lavar Johnson is in his 8th year as lead assistant men’s basketball coach at the university of the Bahamas under head coach Bacchus Rolle. Coach Johnson assists coach Rolle with all facets of the men’s basketball program, specifically the defense, game strategy, player development, and basketball analysis.
Coach Johnson joined the team in 2014, helping to build the club from a struggling upstart into a squad with a winning culture. His leadership style encourages players to embrace the process of growth, helping them to get better by making daily improvements to their game and strengthening their mental preparedness. These lessons are applicable to not only basketball but also to life.
Coach Johnson has more than 25 years of coaching experience, starting in 1996 when he led his local North Andros Junior Boys high school team to a winning record. Coach Johnson also played in many leagues and tournaments all around the Bahamas, winning a Bahamas Basketball Federation (BBF) National championship as a player for San Salvador Pirates. He later served as an assistant coach for Mailboat Cybots, helping them to win championships in the New Providence Basketball (NPBA), Bahamas Government Department Basketball Association (BGDBA), Women Government Department Basketball Association (WGDBA), and a BBF national championship. A certified FIBA coach, Coach Johnson gives back to the youth by teaching the fundamentals of basketball at the Jeff Rogers basketball camp every summer.
