Mingoes cook Bamboo Shack 82-71 to end showcase season

Mingoes guard Kevaro Russell scored 26 points to lead The University of The Bahamas Mingoes to an 82-71 comeback win over Bamboo Shack Elite at the Kendal G Isaacs Gymnasium to close out the men's basketball showcase season.

Behind Russell's 26-point contribution, Shemeco Albury scored 22 points, while Terrance Higgs added 17. John McKenzie snagged 11 rebounds in the win.

While the Mingoes secured a strong victory to cap off the season, the win showed resilience and defense. Albury said while he found his rhythm early, the team had to fight to find their footing.

"The game was good," he said. "I started off good, but the team started off slow. We picked it up at the end, especially on the defensive end. This season was good, we finished the season off strong."

The Mingoes maintained a competitive edge throughout the game, battling back from a slow start where they trailed 25-11 after the first quarter. Assistant coach Lavar Johnson said the talent is already in the building with the team.

"I feel good about the team's performance," Johnson said. "It's just a matter of getting them to work together. When they do that they'll be unbeatable."

For Bamboo Shack Elite, Mikhail Rolle led the team with 24 points in the loss. Keithwood Stubbs put up 21 points to go along with 11 rebounds for Bamboo Shack.

Following the season-ending victory, Russell said: "I feel good overall about the win to end the season off on a good note, I feel as though this was a good season for me, coming to learn some things, and hopefully next season we can go undefeated."

The win ends the team's season with a 14-3 local showcase record.
