UB drops Homecoming Game
It was not the result they wanted but the University of The Bahamas Mingoes fell 81-78 to Nassau Flight Services Ballers Friday, November 8 at the Kendal G.L. Issacs Gymnasium.
Leading the way for UB was captain Theodore Grant with 25 points. He got support from freshman Jerehemiah Miller with a double-double scoring 23 points and grabbing 10 board. Erquante Edgecombe chipped in with 13 points.
Leading the way for the Ballers was Lamount McPhee with a team-high 26 points. Deonte Tinker scored 19 points in the win.
UB's head coach, Bacchus Rolle said it was a tough loss but his coaching staff saw some things they can learn from.
"In the third quarter, we got winded and the game was so close but some of the guys didn't play with the desire and determination that was needed. We had a lot of turnovers. Whenever you turn the ball over 15 or 16 times a game, it's going to be a difficult game in the end. The jump shots weren't going and we didn't make the adjustment and start to penetrate, but ultimately the guys did a wonderful job and tried their best."
The game saw three lead changes and four ties.
UB got off to a slow start in the first quarter to go down 19-11 at the end of that quarter. It was a better offensive display in the second quarter where they outscored the Ballers 24-18 but were still down 37-35 at the half. That quarter saw UB taking its first lead of the game, 24-23 on a Gabriel Style put back with 5:51 remaining.
It was a competitive third quarter that ended with the Ballers holding on to a 60-59 lead setting up for a dramatic fourth quarter. After the Ballers went up 75-67 with 1.30 left in the game, UB began to make a push. Miller made a layup on a Grant assist to cut that lead to 75-71 with 46.1 seconds left in the game. Grant sank two free-throws with 38.7 seconds to make it a three-point game, 76-73. Ballers made a three-point shot with 22.8 seconds to go up 79-73. That shot was the dagger as they held on for the win.
UB students and alumni came out to support their team. Rolle loved the fan support.
"We've been having that support and we truly appreciate it and out guys need to play under that kind of pressure under the fans during the harum-scarum of the game. I appreciate the fans coming out and giving us the energy," Rolle said.
UB return to play in its showcase 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 14 at the same location against Airport Authority.
