Athletes shine at Mingoes Awards
It has been a productive year for both the University of The Bahamas Mingoes athletes and the coaches but the crème de la crème were rewarded for their efforts on and off the field or court at the Mingoes Awards that was held Thursday, April 30 at the Performing Arts Center at UB's Oakes Field Campus.
There was a total of seven coveted awards up for grabs this year namely, the Female Freshman Student-Athlete of the Year, Male Freshman Student, Academic Student-Athlete of the Year, Female Athlete of the Year, Male Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year and Team of the Year.
It was a tough choice for the Team of the Year award, but it was the women's volleyball team
receiving the award for the work they did in competition and the classroom. They finished with a 10-9 win/loss record which was their most ever in the New Providence Volleyball Association (NPVA). They placed third overall and was in the semi-final.
Their head coach, Raymond "Rhymes" Wilson
won the Coach of The Year award. Wilson led the squad to see an improvement from a 5-9 win/loss record last season in the UB Showcase to winning five more games this season.
The women's volleyball team was not finished winning awards that night. They carted off with the Female Student-Athlete of the Year and the Female Freshman Student-Athlete of the Year awards. Team captain and junior Anjeniker Joseph won the Female Student-Athlete of the Year award. Alexandria Pinder
came away with the Female Student-Athlete of the Year award. They were both instrumental to their team's success this year on and off the court.
The Male Student-Athlete of the Year award went to men's soccer team defender Junior Kelly
for his performance on and off the field. Kelly, who plays left back primarily is one of the co-captains for the team. He was part of the stout defense that led UB to a Bahamas Men's Soccer League (BMSL) title with an 11-1-3 win/lose/draw record for 36 points. They allowed the least number of goals in the league which was 12 and had 12 clean sheets in the 26 total games they played.
The men's soccer team's forward Philip Pilgrim won two awards – Academic Student-Athlete of the Year and Male Freshman of the Year. Pilgrim who hails from Barbados, finished his first year with a GPA of 3.48. On the field, he finished with 12 goals and four assists including two hat-tricks.
